The State of South Carolina mandates that you carry a minimum of $25,000 of Bodily Injury Liability per person, $50,000 of Bodily Injury Liability per accident and $25,000 of Property Damage. The state also requires that you carry the same limits for Uninsured Motorist coverage.
Third Party Liability
- $25,000/person BI
- $50,000/accident BI
- $25,000 PD
Uninsured Motorist Coverage
- $25,000/person BI
- $50,000/accident BI
- $25,000 PD ($200 Deductible)
Third Party Liability applies if you are involved in an accident that is deemed your fault. This is the amount of coverage that your auto insurance policy would pay for the bodily injury and property damage that you caused to another person(s) or object that you hit.
Uninsured Motorist coverage applies if you are involved in an accident and you were found to be not-at-fault. It also applies for a hit-and-run accident where you cannot identify who hit you. This coverage represents the amount that your auto insurer will pay for your bodily injuries or property damage to your own vehicle. The state of South Carolina mandates a $200 Deductible.
These coverage amounts are all that is required to be legal in South Carolina.
However, you are responsible for all damages that you might cause in an accident. Your insurance policy is only required to pay up to the limits that you choose. There is a saying that you carry all your assets in the trunk of your vehicle. What that means is if you hit someone and cause severe bodily injury or property damage, you could be subject to a judgement. The injured party can come after your savings, equity in your home, wage garnishments, etc. to recoup their losses.
Fortunately, you do have some recourse. You can choose other coverages and higher limits. Contact Select Insurance to review your policy and make sure you are covered properly.
Here are some additional coverage options to consider.
If you have assets to protect, we recommend that you raise your limits. We also recommend that you look at an excess liability policy to umbrella your auto and property liability limits for $1,000,000 or more.
Other coverages offered include but are not limited to:
- Underinsured Motorist Coverage: This covers you in the event someone hits you and has coverage, but did more damage to you or your vehicle than the policy coverage limits they chose.
- Comprehensive and Collision Coverage: These coverages may be required if you owe money on your vehicle. They coverages help repair or replace your vehicle in the event you are at-fault in an accident or you hit an animal or fire, theft, etc.
- Rental Coverage: This pays to rent you a vehicle if your car is in a comp or collision claim.
- Towing: This pays to tow your vehicle.
